Hello Wonderful SWES K-4 Families!  I hope you all are well and enjoying the first feelings of spring as the daffodils come into bloom and our days grow longer.  I wanted to share some updates with you all as we move into March!

Please Contact Your Classroom Teacher If You Wish Your Child to Continue Masking:  As you are aware, our state's masking mandate will lift on 3/11/22. As a result, beginning Monday, March 14th, masks will become optional in our school buildings and on school buses.  As Dr. Moccia noted in her recent outreach to families "For young children, please let teachers know your wishes and they will do their best to reinforce them.  Therefore, we are asking K-4 families to contact their child's teacher(s) via e-mail (or call our main office at 360-221-4600) no later than Friday, March 11th, to advise if you wish your child to continue wearing a mask at school.

Kindergarten Registration is Open: We are so excited to begin planning for our 2022-2023 Kindergarten students!  We have a variety of events coming up for our families to learn more about our Kindergarten programs:

  • Community Kindergarten Information Night will be held on Thursday March 24th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm in our SWES K-4 Community Room. This event is for our incoming kindergarten families to meet our principal and kindergarten teachers and learn more about our educational approaches for our students.
  • Preschool Age "Pre-K" Students Visit SWES:  During our community kindergarten information night, families can sign up to bring their children to SWES for a campus visit (we will even have a yellow school bus here they can tour!).  This event will be held on Thursday, April 14th from 9:15 - 12:30.
  • In Person or Online Registration Options:  We will have in person Kindergarten registration available for families from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 19th.  Online registration is now open as well, and parents can register their kindergarten student online at this link: https://sw.wednet.edu/families/enrollment

Online Safety 101 Class with Lisa Honold: We are so fortunate to have national online safety expert Lisa Honold as a member of our South Whidbey community!  Lisa will be hosting an "Online Safety 101" online event on Tuesday, March 15th from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm for parents, caregivers, people working with kids and community members. The event is sponsored by the South Whidbey CARES coalition, Readiness to Learn and the Washington State Health Care Authority.  You can use this link to ask questions that will be covered during the training.  web page for people to ask questions in advance too - at https://www.centerforonlinesafety.com/sw-cares.  To register go to:

Please Help us with Trading Card Issue:  We would SO appreciate it if families could help us with the Pokeman trading card problem we are experiencing at school. We have had multiple issues arising at recess over the past few weeks - with students arguing over them, attempting to sell them to one another and even some stealing of one another's cards going on.  Please remind your children that trading cards are not allowed at school.  Thank you so much for your help with this issue!

3rd and 4th Grade Sno-Isle Library Book Club: Would you like to join a fun book club just for South Whidbey third and fourth graders? We meet once a month (on Zoom) on the third Wednesday from 2:30-3:30. Every student receives a copy of the book and a few activities (including supplies) to do before and during our meeting. Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 16.  If you are interested in participating, contact Tracy at [email protected]

Art from the Heart:  Our 4th grade students (and teachers!) are amazing!  4th grade students are leading a service project to support local organizations dealing with issues of homelessness through their "Art from the Heart" program!  Students will be learning more about the issue of homelessness - then creating artwork in their art class and at home for a special art show they will be holding in late April.  We are so grateful to these students for their big hearts and compassion! 4th Grade families will be hearing more about this project from your 4th grade students!
