Exploring Sustainable Farming Practices

Field Trip to Scenic Isle Farm 10/22/2024: Exploring Sustainable Farming Practices

Description: This enriching field trip gave ALE 3rd-5th grade students the chance to visit Scenic Isle Farm in Coupeville, a farm known for its climate-resistant Hubbard squash and deep-rooted history. Scenic Isle has been farming this hardy squash for four generations, adapting its agricultural practices to promote biodiversity and sustainability. During the visit, students learned not only about the agricultural history of the prairie but also the farm’s efforts to protect soil health and adapt to changing climates.

Students engaged in thoughtful conversations, asking questions about farming on the prairie, the challenges faced by the farm, and how they promote soil biodiversity. In addition to these learning opportunities, students also enjoyed exploring the farm’s creative financial ventures, including the spooky sunflower maze, tractor rides, and pumpkin picking.
